Caen: The Battle of Caen was fought from 6th June to 20th July 1944. By the evening of June 6th, the tanks of the 21st Panzer Division, reinforced later that night by those of the 12th SS Hitlerjugend, between them, they had formed a barrier of fire and steel heavy armoury in front of Caen, thus repelling the enemy, the British and Canadians were pinned down in the cornfields around the city.
It was to be the Canadian and British forces first encounter with the 12th SS Hitlerjugend Regiment and a terrible baptism of war for these young SS recruits.
It took allied forces 7 weeks to finally liberate the city. Due to the ferocity of the fighting, much of Caen was destroyed and had to be rebuilt post war.
